Las Animas Mining DisastersAt the beginning of the great mining history of Colorado, there was no organized way of reporting mine fatalities. That changed in when 59 miners at the Crested Butte coal mine in Gunnison County lost their State. A geologic and geochemical investigation and a survey of mines and prospects have been conducted to evaluate the mineral resource potential of the Spanish Peaks Wilderness Study Area, Huerfano and Las Animas Counties, in south-central Colorado. Thestudy area is underlain by sedimentary rocks of Paleozoic to Tertiary age (Johnson, ).
