There are days flying high across the western United States where I can see for miles in any direction, the deep cerulean blue sky arcing above us and making us feel entirely alone in the universe as the wild patterns of the southern Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado deserts unroll below in a tapestry of oranges, reds, browns, grays.
In fact, Lewis and Clark’s expedition had passed that way, but by the time that Vial and Jarvet reached the Platte, the Corps of Discovery was already far to the north, poling up the Missouri. Unable to get a clear idea of where Lewis and Clark were (actually, they were only about miles away), Vial and Jarvet returned to New Mexico. Absolutely one of the top Lewis and Clark books. Lewis and Clark Across the Divide by Carolyn Gilman (, Smithsonian Books) is the National Bicentennial Exhibition catalog and a very detailed history of the expedition and related issues, with excellent photos of artifacts and historic paintings. Very good on Indians and the expedition.
